Magnetic linear encoder

Balluff has expanded its product range of displacement sensors with the new BML. The high-precision incremental BML magnetic linear encoder system consists of a sensing head and a magnetically encoded tape. The sensing head glides over the tape, which is magnetised with alternating polarity, with a gap of up to 2 mm. The period changes on the sensor output are available as standard square wave or sinusoidal signals. Counting or processing of the signals is accomplished using standard incremental or sinus signal counter inputs on the processing electronics. This results in accuracy classes of 10-20 μm. The permissible traverse speed is up to 10 m/s. The measured position value is made available in fractions of microseconds. The controller receives the position signal in real-time. Compared with optical length measurement systems, the Balluff magnetic linear encoder is characterised by its insensitivity to contamination and mechanical effects of shock and vibration.
